Versus Science #36. After hearing about stem cells being o.k.'d to research I can't help but wonder again what the call is on cloning? I have heard a lot but nothing really concrete. I've been watching some movies and it seems to me that there's no good to come of it. What's the plan if something like cloning gets cleared to research? I'm sure it's being done now even without much permission. The technology is here for sure and you know if the technology is here that someone will look into it more. I've seen cloned animals made in colleges but not much about humans. Cloning could help with the shortage of organs for donors maybe but there's also a fear along with that. The cloned organs may not be received as well as one would like until they perfect it. It's like the laser operation to fix your eyesight, what's the point in getting that operation if you can only see better far away but not close up? And even that operation has had a handful of casualties in the beginning. So has gene therapy, which I haven't heard any more on. But if athletes want that done they can simply go to Europe where it's legal if it isn't here. It should be made traceable though, I don't believe that modified people should join athletics. Cloning is much more serious than any of those things though. What good could come from it? I could imagine people cloning chickens or salmon, which are dwindling in number. You know something is wrong when it costs $94.00 for one salmon! What on Earth is going on? Global warming for sure. In the meantime cloning might help the numbers go back up till we can come up with a better idea I suppose. I could imagine a lot of foods being cloned actually. Especially in China, where they have a huge population. I've heard even crazier ideas about cloning... people are wanting to adopt clones of themselves. How insane is that? Is it just me or is that a nightmare waiting to happen? And I believe someone has done it already as far as I know! If that's possible already then God only knows what's to come. Cloning may very well be the only solution for a lot of animals, like Cheetahs that have been forced to inbreed due to smaller numbers, creating disease within the species. But this could lead to a much larger oddity in the future when there's a bunch of dogs that act exactly the same or a bunch of cats with the same personality. Studies being done with pigs and dogs have made successful clones, but at what price? I foresee 6 legged chickens being developed. And what will be the future of the polar bear? Will we clone that creature to keep it alive? I wonder if people are collecting the DNA of plants and animals already, they should be. The worst case scenario would have to be a narcissistic celebrity wanting to clone his or herself! But someone must have the screwed up fantasy of wanting to make love to themself. I could see a hot celebrity making out with herself, that is so messed up...
