Nuclear Holocaust Cleansing

How much truth is there to the idea of a nuclear holocaust? I have no clue but the more I thought about it I started to realize how ludicrous it really is. Not that I didn't notice before, but it all just came to me. To think everyone in the world would shoot missiles at each other is so completely insane that there's no way to begin describing it. Why on Earth would everyone shoot nuclear missiles at each other? It just doesn't add up. But what does make sense is that someone could use a Trident submarine to take out the whole world, it turns out one Trident submarine has enough nuclear firepower to take out the world ten times over. Why would they be carrying that much for Christ's sake?! And the whole idea of a nuclear holocaust isn't really a defensive move, nobody would do that. It's more like a suicide mission type of thing done by a madman. Or if all the nuclear missiles were controlled by a computer system and someone got to it that could make it happen too. It's the idea of WW3 that everyone has, but in today's day and age to have a world war would be so mad and stupid. Everyone has nuclear missiles now. I imagine that sort of thing being possible, but who on Earth would create a "Doomsday" button? It could happen but it'd still be suicide on the part of anyone trying to do that. And what would be left in the aftermath? Would anyone survive? Would new creatures evolve? Would the world come back the same as it was or anew? I don't know why military types refer to nuclear weapons as cleansers, radiation does not sterilize, it kills.
