Going back in time now. I've mentioned the sequel to this movie once but not the first one, "Donnie Darko". This was such a classic movie made to feel like an older movie with a new vibe. Going back in time now. I've mentioned the sequel to this movie once but not the first one, "Donnie Darko". This was such a classic movie made to feel like an older movie with a new vibe. It had the charm of an 80's movie with a really bizarre take on what makes life events play out the way they do. There were themes of time travel and even a supernatural edge, but in the end I think it's all symbolic. It's up to us to pull out of it what we think was happening. I like movies that let you decide for yourself what path to take. Donnie was a really disturbed kid that was quite depressed. He felt he didn't belong anywhere and thought the world would be better off without him. His depression was somewhat of a mystery and somewhat not. You couldn't help but feel for the poor guy because he was a tortured soul. A lost soul. A mysterious rabbit talks to him about the end of the world, as if an imaginary friend. There's a countdown so we know something is going to happen eventually but we don't know what. All we can assume is the end of the world maybe. I liked how this movie juggled different plot threads simultaneously without mucking things up too much. It throws you for a loop at a certain undetermined point and you can't help but wonder what's going on. He later learns that he may have killed a friend somehow and then there's this old lady that knows something about time travel. He starts to suspect that some kind of time space anomaly may have occurred and goes to her to try to figure it out. I was wondering the same thing but I may have answered my own question. Maybe it was a time space anomaly that messed up his life and basically erased him. Then you'll hear people say that maybe the world was better off without him since he was so depressed. I don't think that has to be true but depression can be hard to get out of. It could all be a big metaphor also for a guy that felt unwanted by society. He acted like he didn't exist and in the end he didn't exist. No matter how you look at it you can come up with your own theory. The root of the problem was his depressive state deep down though. All the rest was portraying a strange supernatural force at work that could have been there to clean up loose ends by leading people or erasing them? Not sure. It's a good movie to make you think and keep you wondering. I'm even wanting to see it again right now since I can't remember the whole movie entirely. There is a message about choosing our destiny and not letting life make the choices because if we choose to do nothing life does have a way of making the choices for us. There are a lot of us that might feel like we could be in oblivion like Donnie but it doesn't have to stay that way. I'd give this movie a very high cult classic rating. It was made for one. Was it all the doing of time or his own actions? You decide.
