Prometheus Unraveled

Versus Movie #123. After watching the "Alien" movies I thought I'd give "Prometheus" a shot and see what it was all about. They said at first that it was a prequel but then it turns out it's supposedly a movie unrelated to the others while still in the same universe. I suppose that makes sense but it does explain some things about the first Alien movie though. This movie can be described as a very good sci-fi flick, not so much an action movie like Alien, but a new epic to go up there with the likes of "Event Horizon" in the pantheon of sci-fi horror. Some wanted more aliens in there or more action somehow but it does a good job of working up to all the action so you never see it coming. After the first half of the movie you're left wondering what the second half will be like and it blows you away. It starts out slow, even dragging at times, but those dragging moments are integral to any atmospheric sci-fi titan. What are the motivations of the shady corporation funding the mission? What's up with that cold, unfeeling exterior to the woman hosting their journey? Is she a robot? All these archeologists and scientists know is they're working for a dead business magnate that believed he found the creators of mankind. You can't expect aliens everywhere like in "Alien Vs. Predator: Requiem" because that's a different type of movie. I was fascinated by the idea of finding our creators, as pious and arrogant as that is. It would be like a scientist to think such a way. The engineers, as they call them, were indeed related to us, at least by DNA, but they were 7 to 9 feet tall, muscular, clammy, and of a despondent disposition. Not much is known about how humans could be so different than them but we were created by a lone engineer. The one at the beginning that drank a black liquid was that engineer. He killed himself by disintegration into the base form of DNA, like unraveling himself. We will never know why he created us but one can imagine with great intelligence comes great vision. When you're from a highly intellgent, technologically advanced species you can come up with all sorts of ideas. They were masters of genetic engineering after all. It is a shock they they were so much more advanced than us but we were not created by them, only one of them. I can totally feel for the scientists in this movie since it is likely that we would do the same thing and look for these celestial beings. The suspense in this movie was perfect. If there's one thing that really stands out that would be it. Upon finding this planet they found a massacre and their fate was sealed. No alien monsters anywhere, but there was a sealed off room they they should have left alone. Call it biological warfare but the black liquid that secreted from the urn shaped metallic vases was a weapon of sorts. I have never agreed with any form of biological warfare so it came as a shock to me to see an intelligent race create such things. These engineers were brilliant, like veritable geniuses, but they wanted to exterminate us like bugs. The "god" syndrome where the gods want to vanquish their creation. Can you imagine finding the origins of human life only to find our possible demise? Some things are better left unfound. The ability to terraform even the most inhospitable climates on any planet is one that could come in handy. The engineers terraformed the planet to create weapons apparently, since no cities were found. And just like a human, we went in search of what's in that room the holograms ran to in the replay. We are a curious lot aren't we? Just like a cat. That black liquid oozing from the urns is what mutated the worms in the ground to become those cobra face huggers. And if that's not enough the android became jealous of humans, not being recognized for his intellect. I was jealous of his incredible ability to learn. He studied them and realized he was not like them. He also had free will. When you make an android that smart it will do what it wants. So he put the black goo in water for a human to ingest. Maybe his new found childish contempt caused him to start the alien cycle. This is where it all starts going into action/horror. I especially liked how the cave was a spaceship. They stockpiled a lot of that black goo on this ship to eradicate us, or was it to grow xenomorphs? The two stage evolution with the trilobite was spurned by this goo, which was pure DNA. It had to have been more than that though to create the two stage monster. But pure DNA in the sense that it could transform any organic creature. Some theorize a weapon like this could be used against humans while others say it was for a civil war on the engineer home planet. Some say they would harvest xenomorphs for war using humans. Like killing two birds with one stone. This movie was very entertaining and carries intrinsic value to the genre. One can only wonder what the driven female scientist found upon reaching the engineer's far-off home planet. That open ending was the perfect way to leave it.
