The Train That Makes No Stops

This is officially creepy week. Here at VCH creepy week (I like to say that) kicks off again with "Train", starring Thora Birch of "American Beauty" fame. Train is about a train of course and this type of movie could either have depth or none at all. It could go either way but it does have more of a story. In other countries tourists are kind of sitting ducks for all types of maniacs out there that might want to take advantage of you being a stranger in a different country. Nobody knows you and people can vanish. It's a scary reality that this movie touches on. A seemingly normal train is the perfect setting in a poor...

A seemingly normal train is the perfect setting in a poor country for a tourist on one of those "self" tours where they take their own route around a country. In this movie you can't even tell that the train is shady in any way. I didn't even expect what was to come later. I just imagined that maybe there would be a psycho on a train or something. You would think that a tourist might know what trains are coming from where but if you take your own tour then you don't know what train is going where. This is definitely a different type of movie for Thora and I think it could help her grow her acting range. So you don't want to know what goes on in the caboose end of the train. The very end train car is what hides the horror to be had here. I think the premise is quite plausible and a harsh truth of what goes on in the end. It's sort of formula but you still don't see many movies like this out there so that formula isn't bad. It helps it feel more mainstream despite being a direct to video title. But even with that streamlined feel it still manages to scare you with psychos ready to butcher you in the back of the train. I think that's a sign of how well done it was for a simple idea. Some direct to video movies are done well and deserve to be seen. A lot do really. You go from wondering how they could commit such horrors to understanding and still feeling horrified. It leaves you feeling scared for what could really be going on out there and works as a movie at the same time. It opens our eyes to horror real and unreal. I like the train genre and there aren't many out there. Take the guided tour.
