Of Blood And Stone

Versus Book #79. Starting things off after the remodel of my site means coming up with something good. And this is good indeed. The 4th installment in the vampire series by John G. Rees is here! "Out Of Stone" is one grand and gothic achievement. His style is very dark and unrelenting. He knows no bounds and fears no authority. As a reviewer I've had the chance to have his works sent to me and I have grown to love his style. He's taught me a lot about sentence structure along the way. My grammar technique has changed after reading his works. I am forever changed. In this story a new character takes precedence. A girl, Sechra, was a young character in a previous outing in the series. Now older, she becomes the main protagonist propelling the events in this book. I really felt a lot of pain and anger in this work and it made me understand what an escape or release it could be. You can set your mind free and unleash the bloodiest hell on paper. His style is the most vicious, bloody, and uncompromising I've ever laid eyes on, and that's a very good thing. My own mind was perhaps somewhat censored until I came across his first book, "Anoxic Zone". He uses multi-level plot lines intertwining multiple characters like a pro. That's very hard to do for an amateur. Sure, his grammar isn't perfect but that is the blood on the hands of a true working, independent writer, not some disillusioned and jaded wealthy man with nothing better to do. Real writers stay up late, grow tired, eyes weary, and edit their own work. The end result is gratifying because he did what many haven't. He put out his works successively and rapidly while many just yearn to be a full fledged writer. Even in my own life writing is hard to find time for and he shows us that within all the imperfections is the real accomplishment. I am inspired by him and writing needs to become a priority for me. The way he paints the world of the vampire is unlike any out there. You won't find a more violent, brooding, evil portrayal of a vampire. With tunnels made from the hands of doomed slaves and their bones filling the cracks, to a prison for criminals with no windows and a pit full of rotting bodies, you can bet he's the king of morbid vampire visions. As they should be really. Vampires are no walk in the park. They're even beings that only live for vile thrills. Yet in his works they find some sense of humanity and even redemption. Though they still cast themselves out of society. There's a strong supernatural theme in his books that you don't see in many vampire stories. It adds an evil edge with the hatred from witnessing war atrocities filling stone sculptures only to torture others. It's classic, gory and downright putrescent. You will love the vampire again if you want more than blood! If you want the hatred, torturous dreams, sadness, yearning, and somber sorrow that they feel then this is the work for you. I like books that stand out among the rest and that's why this one made an impact. To me, he had the balls to write a truly horrific version of the vampire as one would imagine it. And he managed to never utter the word 'vampire' even once!
